The Office of Student Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) focuses on the whole student and how student intersectional identities—such as race, class, gender identity, religion, spirituality, ability, and sexuality—impact daily interactions and experiences. The Office of Student DEIB collaborates with student organizations, campus-wide committees, and other administrative offices to provide programs and learning opportunities that explore issues related to social identity and equity, intercultural dialogue, and inclusion and belonging.
Some initiatives include:
- The Real Talk @ SLC is a student-led and facilitated dialogue series that focuses on topics related to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, social identities, and experiences. Real Talk facilitators partner with peer counselors, student organizations, and campus offices to foster respectful dialogue, support student mediation, and lead student-centered programming.
- The THRIVE Mentorship Program for Students of Color is a yearlong program that connects first-years and transfer students with upperclass students at Sarah Lawrence College.
- EXPLORE Pre-Orientation; The EXPLORE program works in collaboration with the pre-orientation programs for Community Partnerships and Theatre, fostering connections across these groups while offering workshops on key aspects of transitioning to college. The workshops cover making Sarah Lawrence College feel like home, whether the student comes from a different country or environment; identity exploration, including spiritual identity, BIPOC experiences, international student perspectives, and more; self-advocacy; and community building.
- Monthly Friday Breakfast in The HUB is an opportunity to connect and network over a cooked meal. The Office of Student DEIB hosts monthly Friday Breakfasts in The HUB in collaboration with various campus departments. Past partnerships include: Career Services, Residential Life, DEI Committee, Graduate Studies, Office of Spiritual Life, and more!
Student DEIB staff advise and support identity-based student organizations and spaces such as Common Ground and LGBTQIA Space, offer mediation and resources for students facing bias or exclusion, oversee the Chosen Name form and Meal Swipe Sharing Program, and serve as a key member of the Bias Incident Response Team.
