Introduction from President Judd
It is my pleasure to introduce Sarah Lawrence alumna Lucinda Childs, both to honor her as part of our Commencement exercises and to have her share a few words with you.
Lucinda is a pioneering choreographer, dancer, and performance artist whose bold, distinctive vision has shaped the landscape of postmodern dance for more than half a century. Shortly after graduating from Sarah Lawrence, she began her remarkable career with the groundbreaking Judson Dance Theater before forming her own company in 1973. She has choreographed more than 80 works over her storied career, each one showcasing her signature artistry, boldness, and collaborative spirit.
Lucinda’s honors and accolades are as numerous as they are prestigious, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival, Venice Biennale Golden Lion, and New York Dance and Performance (aka “Bessie”) awards for lifetime achievement, enshrinement in the Hall of Fame of the National Museum of Dance, and membership in France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres at the rank of Commandeur.
Lucinda, I now ask you to join me at the podium.
Lucinda, in recognition of your work and the spirit in which you do it, be it resolved that the Board of Trustees of Sarah Lawrence College commends you on the occasion of the 97th Commencement of the College and does hereby confer upon you, by authority of the Board of Regents of the State of New York, the degree Doctor of Arts, honoris causa, with all of the rights and privileges thereunto appertaining.
