Architecture and Design Studies

Architecture and design studies at Sarah Lawrence College is a cross-disciplinary initiative that offers a variety of approaches to the act of constructing environments, buildings, and functional objects. Architecture studios, courses in architectural and art history and theory, computer design, environmental studies, physics, and sculpture allow students to investigate—in both course work and conference—a wide range of perspectives and issues dealing with all facets of built design. These perspectives include architectural design, landscape and urban design, explorations in history and criticism, approaches that engage social and political issues, and sustainable design, through both digital and analog design skills.

Courses of study might include the study of architecture and politics, sustainability and environmental studies, drawing and sculpture, physics and technology, or the uses of techniques and crafts of construction. Interested students may also wish to connect with the Center for the Urban River at Beczak (CURB) to learn about the intersection of the environment with urban planning. When coordinated with participating faculty, programs of study offer an excellent preparation for post-graduate engagement in the fields of architecture and environmental design and engineering.
