Introduction
At Sarah Lawrence College, we uphold the belief that our students are responsible adults capable of managing their own lives and seeking guidance when necessary. Additionally, we are dedicated to safeguarding student privacy and confidentiality.
While our usual mode of communication is direct with students, we acknowledge that, under certain circumstances and in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, parental notification may be necessary. Our foremost aim in such instances is to prioritize the well-being and safety of our students and the broader community.
General Principles
Communicate With Students: College staff will make every effort to engage in dialogue with the student before reaching out to the parent(s) or guardian(s). This discussion will cover the potential benefits and challenges associated with parent/guardian notification.
Collaborative Approach: Throughout the notification process, we strive to collaborate with both students and their parents or guardians.
Professional Judgment: When considering whether to notify parents or guardians, our staff will exercise professional judgment to determine what is essential for the student’s welfare.
Example Circumstances for Parent Notification
Health and Safety: If a student poses a risk of harm to themselves or others, including instances of mental health or medical emergencies, parent/guardian notification may be warranted.
Missing Student: Parents or guardians may be notified if an official report of a missing student is filed.
Disciplinary Matters: In cases involving serious disciplinary violations that could impact a student’s enrollment, parents or guardians may be notified.
Alcohol or Other Drugs: Notification may occur in cases of repeated violations of laws or policies concerning alcohol or other drugs for students under the age of 21.
Academic Standing: For students who are considered a dependent for tax purposes, parents may be notified if the student is placed on academic probation or suspension.
