Revision Description

Finding Aid entered in Archivists' Toolkit by Alayna Barrett. November 2014

Conditions Governing Access note

Various kinds of materials are included in the collection, some of which have specific restrictions.

1. Archival materials in the public domain, limited largely to those that come from the National Archives and the Library of Congress (  note: NOT the Smithsonian). These materials may be used without restriction.

2. Archival materials obtained from all other sources, for which the EFC purchased or was granted limited, one-time rights of use only for the production. For purposes of SLC, these materials  may not be used beyond research without obtaining special permission from the archival source. Ruth Pollak will be happy to furnish contact names and addresses for any faculty member or student who wishes to gain such permission.

3. Transcripts of scholar interviews. This material is strictly for research or study purposes and may not be quoted without special permission from the individual interviewed. The release forms signed by each interviewee make it clear that the purpose of the interview was strictly for the program. Again, it is likely that most of the individuals interviewed would grant permission if personally contacted, and Ms. Pollak can provide those contacts.

4. No part of the video program may be reproduced. If additional copies of the production are needed, Ms. Pollak will be happy to provide them.

Acquisition note

Donated by Ruth Pollak (B.A. '51) in June 2003.

Processing Information note

Processed by Lea Osborne in 2003-2004.

Scope and Contents note

In 1993, the Educational Film Center (EFC) was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to develop a two hour documentary depicting the seventy-two year battle for the women's vote in America. Titled "One Woman, One Vote," the program premiered on "The American experience" PBS series in February, 1995, during the 75th anniversary year of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution. Susan Sarandon narrated the production, and the principle characters were voiced by actresses such as Julie Harris, Frances Sternhagen, Amy Irving, Linda Hunt, and Pat Carroll.

Following several years of repeat PBS broadcasts, "One Woman, One Vote" has enjoyed continuous distribution and has been purchased by hundreds of college and university libraries for use in both women's studies and women's history departments. The companion book of scholarly articles, whose title is shared with the film, has also enjoyed wide distribution.

Because of the generous NEH grant and support from "American Experience," producer Ruth Pollak was able to hire a staff to scour the United States for archival text and images related to the long battle which took place in every state of the union. Materials were gathered from most state historical societies, many private libraries including Hunt and Schlesinger, personal collections such as that of Elizabeth Cady Stanton's great granddaughter, federal sources such as the Library of Congress, Smithsonian, and National Archives, and from commercial archival footage houses.

One of the unique aspects of the EFC collection is the presence of suffrage movement music. From the earliest days, suffragists adapted known folk and popular songs to their own lyrics, and popular music publishers sold original sheet music, both pro- and anti-suffrage. Examples from a variety of music types are included in the collection. For the production, composer Paul Brier adapted several selections from the research, orchestrating each number according to period and style. Brier also composed the general score of original music.

In addition to the archival materials, the filmmakers also interviewed many of the country's principle women's historians whose work encompasses the subject. Transcripts of these interviews are included in the collection.

Understandably, only a small fraction of the materials gathered from hundreds of sources ended up in the video. The filmmakers hope that the larger body will prove valuable as a research and study tool.

There are two avenues that should prove useful at the college. Film studies will find that "One Woman, One Vote" is a sturdy example of what it takes to develop an accurate historical documentary. For film students interested in this area of production, the breadth and depth of the search and archive may serve as a guide.

Women’s Studies and Women’s History students will discover primary and secondary source documents, and images dating from Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s call for the vote at the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention to the 1920 ratification in Tennessee. In addition, the filmmakers have sent an abundance of images from both the suffrage movement and the contextual time periods and themes relating to the struggle as well as biographical material on prominent suffrage leaders.

Some materials remain at EFC, including notebooks with images as they appear in the production. If researcher wished to borrow particular photos, the filmmakers can loan them out on a temporary basis, and if it useful these notebooks can eventually make their way to SLC. Meanwhile, see the general papers for a chronological guide to images and their sources.

A note on the Organization of materials From its conceptual moments, “One Woman, One Vote” was intended for short use as a broadcast television production and long extended use in the classroom. For this reason, the two-hour program was divided into thematic (and generally chronological) units which could be extracted by teachers wishing to focus on a particular aspect of the long and complex nationwide story. Based on the continuing positive response from academia, this approach has proved successful.

Folders consisting of copies of primary and secondary sources are dated according to recorded and approximate dates of Ruth Pollak's research, copies, scans, and reproductions.
