Tell us about your international journey: where have you lived? Where is home for you?
I was born and raised in Japan. When I turned 15 years old, my parents and I moved to Kansas city in Kansas because of my father's job. I attended a high school in Virginia for a semester and transferred to another school in Lexington, MA. After I went to a conservative school, I chose Sarah Lawrence. For me, my home is in Yamanashi. I usually tell people it's like West Virginia but the Japanese version. However, I've never been to West Virginia.
How did you learn about Sarah Lawrence?
Some of my family friends and the English teacher told me about Sarah Lawrence. I told them I wanted to attend a small college where I could meet with professors regularly.
What made you choose SLC?
I didn't know what I wanted to become in the future, so I couldn't choose a major. Most schools ask students to choose majors, but Sarah Lawrence lets students explore many fields. I love the freedom in education, and there are dons to guide us.
What is the SLC community like?
We are all unique in a good way. In the dorm, I talk about politics with my friends and exchange our thoughts even though their concentrations are not politics. They also tell me a way to create clones and discuss whether it's morally wrong or not. Another friend said the soil is one of the ways to fix climate change. Of course, I do not know anything about biology and environmental science. Still, I love to listen to what they say. We also know how to enjoy life. SLC has some great events and parties. One of my favorites is Rocky Horror Picture Show Shadow Cast Production. I would call this event Very American. We gather in an auditorium to watch, dance, and sing Rocky Horror together. It's very fun. You should come to SLC just to join this event!
What are some of your favorite things to do at SLC? Where are some of your favorite places to go off campus?
I love talking to friends and studying with them in Andrew's garden. The garden is nice and quiet most of the time. When stressed, I leave the campus to see the Met Opera. They have student tickets! It's amazing.
What advice do you have for international students applying to SLC?
Go for it! Once you find something you want to do, professors in SLC will help you!
