On January 15, the Sarah Lawrence College Men’s Basketball team marked eight years of partnering with Family Service Society of Yonkers (FSSY) over winter break to support children from Yonkers Public Schools.
The team participated in FSSY’s afterschool program at two Yonkers schools — Eugenio Maria de Hostos Micro-Society School and Family School 32 — where they helped students with homework, read stories, played chess, and, of course, hit the gym.
This annual tradition reflects a value shared across Sarah Lawrence athletics: a deep commitment to service, leadership, and showing up not only for each other, but for our local community. For our student-athletes, being part of a team means contributing not only on the court but beyond it, building relationships, making a positive impact, and carrying that commitment with them wherever they go.
“Volunteering with the team at FSSY has been great,” said co-captain Brady Burman ’26. “We get to spend time with each other, building camaraderie as we’re trying to teach kids long division (which most of us have forgotten) and paint with water colors. At the same time, we get to support these local programs. The kids enjoy our presence, and getting to play Steal the Bacon, chess, and Are You Smarter than a 7-Year-Old makes each experience fun for everyone involved.”
