16th- and 17th-Century writers thought a great deal about friendship, fellowship, and community. What does it mean to call a friend “a second self”? Do men and women envision friendship differently? What does it take to create and maintain “a small circle of friends?” We will consider these questions, among others, as we discuss poems, essays, and drama by John Donne, Katherine Phillips, Ben Jonson, Thomas Carew, Henry Vaughan, Aemilia Lanyer, Cicero, Montaigne, Francis Bacon, and Shakespeare.
