Source of Pride
I have read the whole of the exceptional fall 2018 issue and wanted to tell you how much I appreciated it. Indeed, SLC grads are quite a remarkable group of people, and one can really be proud of them.
It can only redound to Sarah Lawrence’s reputation to have had a scientist of anthropologist Irving Goldman’s stature and reputation who, in turn, inspired a student at SLC to go on to her own fantastic career and reputation.
Lux Boelitz Vidal ’51 is indeed, as the article says, extremely modest and so brilliant. The Oiapoque museum is mentioned as being run by the Indians, which is completely true, but it was Lux’s idea, conceived to be subsequently run by them. It works beautifully and is indeed an example known throughout Brazil and Latin America.

Beacon of Light
It is with profound grief that I share that Alana Nicole Devich Cyril ’97 has died after a relentless battle with stage 4 cancer. She is and always will be the light of my life, my wife and best friend, the magic in my world.
I will honor her with everything in my spirit. Please join me. Light a candle, speak a joyful word, put some mercy into the world.

Lifelong Learner
I still have much of the excitement and enthusiasm that SLC instilled in me (some days more than others, I admit, but only due to diminished physical energy). From the neck up, I’m still “raring to go”! Something will come along that really piques my interest, and I’m off and running again.

I treasure my memories of SLC and my roommate, Judy Greenspan Schoenstein ’58. She and I still speak at least once a week and see each other frequently.

Music to the Ears
I really enjoyed reading Jane Alexander’s “Enthralled.” I am writing a memoir of my life as a scientist and teacher at SLC and found her piece to be an excellent model, melding observation and reflection. An important point of her piece is that if you keep your eyes open, you will see a fascinating natural world wherever you live. I share her enthusiasm for the song of the Wood Thrush and, indeed, it is that song that alerts me to incoming calls on my iPhone.

Nurturing Nature
Thank you so much for editing such a beautiful layout of my book excerpt. I just love it. The illustration is wonderful and so touching to me. The younger me to a T. It was a pleasure to be featured in this fine SLC publication.
