Lunchbox Theatre

Big imaginations. New friendships. Free theatre for young people.

A character to invent. A story to bring to life. A chance to discover what happens when young people create together.

Lunchbox Theatre is a free theatre program for students in grades K-12 at Sarah Lawrence College. Through theatre games, movement, storytelling, and scene building, participants explore their creativity, work collaboratively, and discover new ways to follow their own creative impulse.

Whether your child loves the spotlight or prefers to take things slowly, Lunchbox offers a playful, supportive place to explore.

A place to play, create, and belong

At Lunchbox, students’ ideas are part of the story. Participants work with teaching artists and one another to imagine characters, develop scenes, and bring their creations to life.

Along the way, students have opportunities to:

  • Find their voice by sharing ideas and exploring different ways to communicate.
  • Build connections through group games, shared stories, and creative collaboration.
  • Stretch their imagination through movement, character development, and storytelling.
  • Practice listening and teamwork as they create something together.
  • Enjoy screen-free fun in a welcoming, creative setting.

The creative process matters here: trying something new, learning from one another, and discovering what each participant can contribute.

Theatre with a community spirit

Part of Sarah Lawrence’s Theatre and Civic Engagement work, Lunchbox has connected the College and the community since 1997. The program brings student teaching artists and young people together through a shared love of creativity and performance.

Sessions combine playful exploration with opportunities to develop and share original work. Family showcases give families and caregivers a chance to celebrate what participants have been creating.

What parents appreciate

Parents describe Lunchbox as a place for social connection, creative expression, and growing confidence:

“Social skills, respect, and understanding are very important to me for my kids, and they definitely develop these at Lunchbox.”

“School doesn't offer arts engagement, so Lunchbox is a paramount creative outlet.”
