Historical note

The Student Senate began in the first year of the College as the Student Council. The members drew up a school constitution that dealt with such issues as smoking (which was permitted almost everywhere on campus, but not in downtown Bronxville), the proper locations and times in which to entertain male guests, and how the weekend curfew should be set for students. The 1969-1970 academic year was one of tremendous change on campus. Included in this moment full of protests against the war, civil rights violations, and gender discrimination, the Student Council was renamed the Student Senate. Through the years, however, the purpose of the Senate remained the same even though the needs and composition of the academic community it served changed. From an all-female organization to a mixed-gender one, the students that participated in this academic government body worked to ensure that their fellow students had a voice on campus, a voice that was listened to by the Board of Trustees, the faculty, and the administration.

Scope and Contents note

The collection consists of minutes from Student Senate meetings, which also include correspondence from the President of the College and any additional supplemental material brought to the meetings. In the early years of the College, students who violated College rules had their cases reviewed by the Student Council, thus, some of the proceedings appear in the minutes. The collection also contains budget information, the bylaws of the College, the first constitution of the College, and Students for Students Scholarship Fund (SSSF) material, including correspondence and flyers from the Fallfest, Winterfest, and Mayfair Weekend. The annual Children’s Fair, which is a major fundraiser for the Scholarship, is part of Mayfair Weekend. SSSF is one of the first student-run scholarship funds in the United States.

Also includes some meeting minutes for All-Student Meetings and House Presidents’ Meetings.

The meeting minutes folder for 2008-2009 only contains minutes for the October 28, 2008 Senate meeting.
