Biographical note
Meyer Rabban, born in 1918 to a Jewish family in West Virginia, received his B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1939 and went on to receive his M.A. from Teachers College of Columbia University in Child Development in 1948 and his Ph.D. in Psychology in 1950 from Columbia University. Rabban was a teaching assistant in the Psychology Department of Columbia University from 1948 to 1949 before becoming a faculty member of the Psychology Department of Sarah Lawrence College in 1949. He officially retired in 1989, though he stopped teaching in 1988. In addition to his work at Sarah Lawrence, he directed camps, was Director of the Windward School (an independent pre-school and elementary school in White Plains, NY from 1955 to 1961) and lectured at Adelphi College and Bank Street College of Education. He held the Roy E. Larsen Chair of Psychology from 1987 to 1989.
Scope and Contents note
The papers consist of research and teaching notes, newspaper articles, papers, and class assignments from Meyer Rabban's time at Sarah Lawrence College. Subject files and class assignments comprise the majority of the collection. Documents on highly acidic and fragile paper were photocopied and the originals discarded.
Subject files include research notes, articles and press releases on books and films regarding the subject noted on the folder. The collection has little correspondence which is interspersed throughout the various folders. For example, the folder for the lecture on “Group Effectiveness and Individual Needs” contains correspondence about the talk as well as the talk itself. Class assignments are mostly from his class on Psychology and Social Issues.
