Biographical note

Joan S. Harrison was born April 29, 1934 to Harry and Rose Horowitz in Orange, N.J. She grew up in Maplewood, N.J. and attended schools in South Orange, N.J. Harrison graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University with a Bachelor’s degree in history in 1956. Following graduation, she entered a graduate program in Arabic history at Radcliffe, where she earned her M.A. in 1957. Harrison was awarded a scholarship to continue her studies at Harvard’s Middle East Institute, but at this time she met her future husband. She declined the opportunity to continue her education at Harvard, moved to New York, and entered a doctoral program in history at Columbia University. On March 23, 1958, she married David Harrison. Although she earned the necessary doctoral credits and arranged a dissertation topic, Harrison found that her doctoral studies infringed upon her ability to devote time to her new marriage and she took time off to reassess her goals. Thereafter, from 1959 to 1964, Joan taught history and English in Weehawken, N.J. public schools and at Farleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, N.J. and found that she loved her work. At this time, the Harrisons also began a family, resulting in two children, Andrew and Rachel. Harrison later worked on developing educational material in Englewood, N.J. and by August 1973, she accepted a position at Sarah Lawrence College as Assistant to the Dean of Studies. Eventually, she was promoted to Associate Dean of Studies, a position she held until her death. From 1979-1980, she also served as Acting Associate Director of the Center for Continuing Education at Sarah Lawrence. In 1978, Harrison entered a master’s program in advertising at Bank Street College and graduated with a M.S. in 1982. In 1983, she entered a doctoral program at the Union for Experimenting Colleges and Universities and received her PhD. in Human Development in 1988. In the mid-1980s, Harrison began a battle with lymphoma, which she fought for eight years until her untimely death on May 31, 1993.
