These paintings are part of a visual journal, each one serves as a poem or daily thought. My teacher, Ansei Uchima, encouraged me to paint small watercolor studies for larger works. This way of working has remained a consistent practice for me for over 40 years. Creating is an act that respects the known, unknown, and not-yet-conscious of our collective human experience. It acknowledges the need that human beings must mark time, create beauty, and mitigate trauma using our own bodies.
