Sarah Lawrence College offers several in-person degree programs designed to lead to professional licensure and/or certification (see below).
In accordance with U.S. Department of Education regulation (34 CFR §668.43), institutions must disclose whether completion of a program meets the educational requirements for professional licensure in each U.S. state or territory. These programs meet the educational requirements for licensure or certification in New York State and other jurisdictions listed below. For the purposes of the Professional Licensure Rules under 34 CFR §668.43, students of Sarah Lawrence College who are enrolled in any in-person professional or certification degree programs offered in New York are considered to be located in New York State.
Sarah Lawrence College is not the licensure authority in any jurisdiction and cannot guarantee that an individual graduate will be granted licensure. Licensure and certification requirements are established by individual states and territories and are subject to change and to interpretation by state regulators. In addition, state licensure boards and agencies may require applicants to meet additional requirements beyond completion of an educational program in order to obtain professional licensure or certification, such as passing licensure examinations, completing supervised experiences post degree completion, successfully completing background checks, and complying with other application and eligibility requirements.
The following academic degree programs prepare students for professional licensure or certification. Sarah Lawrence College will periodically review and update this information as needed. Determinations below address educational requirements only and do not include other state requirements such as examinations, supervised experience, background checks, or residency requirements. Students are expected to understand and review any additional requirements. Continuing education may also be required for maintenance of certification/licensure.
If a program does not meet, or has not been determined to meet, the educational requirements for licensure in a student’s state of residence, Sarah Lawrence College will provide direct written disclosure and if applicable Student Attestation information for student review and completion prior to enrollment or continuation in the program.
Prospective students may consult with the Graduate Studies Office at the College via email at gradstudies@

The Sarah Lawrence College Art of Teaching degree is an in-person integrated Master of Science in Education (MSEd) program of study that prepares students for triple New York State teacher certification in Early Childhood Education (birth to grade 2), Childhood Education (grade 1 to grade 6), and Early Childhood Students with Disabilities (birth to grade 2). Students who complete the MSEd in the Art of Teaching complete all academic program requirements for initial teacher certification and licensure in New York State and are recommended by the program for initial certification in Early Childhood Education (birth to grade 2), Childhood Education (grade 1 to grade 6), and Early Childhood Students with Disabilities (birth to grade 2). Students must also complete New York state-mandated examinations and certification workshops required for these three certification areas in order to qualify for professional licensure, as determined by New York State. Completing these required certification workshops is a requirement of the Art of Teaching degree.

Dance/Movement Therapy (MS)
Professional Licensure Disclosure
The Sarah Lawrence College Dance/Movement Therapy program is accredited by the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) as an approved program through June 2031. Upon completion, students are awarded a Master of Science (MS) in Dance/Movement Therapy and graduates are automatically eligible to apply for the R-DMT (Registered Dance/Movement Therapist) credential upon graduation. After accumulating paid working hours and attending to other requirements, graduates may apply for the BC-DMT (Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist), which enables them to conduct a private practice.
The program is registered with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as a licensure-qualifying program in Creative Arts Therapy, meeting the educational requirements for the LCAT (Licensed Creative Arts Therapist) in New York State. Because the LCAT credential is unique to New York State, the program does not meet the state educational requirements for licensure as a Creative Arts Therapist in any other state or territory.
New York State licensure as a Creative Arts Therapist (CAT) is available after 1,500 hours of approved clinical work under the limited permit, and is granted after successful completion of the licensing exam. Graduates of the program who choose to pursue employment in New York State after graduation can apply for a limited permit, which is the first step toward licensure. The number of graduates who choose to remain in New York State varies from year to year; many choose to pursue employment outside of New York State and therefore do not pursue Creative Arts Therapy licensure. The percentages below represent the number of graduates who have applied for the permit and successfully completed licensing requirements in New York State out of the total number of graduates.
| Graduation date | May 2021 | May 2022 | May 2023 |
|---|---|---|---|
| # of permits | 2 | 2 | 10 |
| # of CAT licenses | 3 | 5 | 1 |
| % applied for permits | 63% | 78% | 79% |
There are varied pathways to licensure for mental health professionals. Some creative arts therapists practice under other licenses, such as Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or similar. Students who intend to work outside of New York State and/or intend to seek licensure under a different credential than the LCAT should contact the Program Director, Elise Risher (erisher@sarahlawrence.edu) to discuss whether the program meets educational requirements for that specific license in their intended state of employment.
Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling (MS)
The Sarah Lawrence College Human Genetics Program offers a Master of Science (MS) in Human Genetics, and is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling. The program was reaccredited in 2025 for an eight year term (expiring August 1, 2033). As such, the program meets the Genetic Counseling profession’s standards for academic education and fieldwork training. Graduates complete all of the academic and fieldwork training requirements to qualify for the certification examination in genetic counseling by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC), as well as the educational requirements to be eligible for the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC) board examination. Successful completion of the ABGC certification examinations qualifies Sarah Lawrence College graduates to receive the Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC®) credential, thus enabling them to practice as Genetic Counselors in all 50 U.S. states.
ABGC certification is valid for five years. After five years, each Diplomate is required to recertify to maintain the CGC® credential through continuing education or by taking the exam.
The vast majority of our graduates take the American Board of Genetic Counseling's (https://www.abgc.net/) certification exam. Pass rates are listed below.
