The course will examine some questions about music that have been raised by philosophers in recent decades: how does music convey meaning? What makes music expressive? Does it express emotions and, if so, whose emotions are they, and how are they related to the emotions we experience in everyday life? What can we infer about the composer from the evidence of the music? Absolute music, or music for instruments alone, has generally been the focus of these questions, but we will look at examples from the song and operatic repertory as well, including music by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Ives, and Shostakovich.
