On Tuesday, November 4, the Sarah Lawrence community gathered to celebrate the first anniversary of The HUB, campus’ newest student space, which focuses on Humanity, Understanding, and Belonging. The theme for the celebration was Past, Present, and Future.
Throughout the day, students and staff hosted a variety of events, including a talk by College Archivist Christina Kasman, a global art activity led by the International Student Services team, a bouquet making and blessings station with Spiritual Life, a zine making session hosted by TransAction, s'mores and intention setting with the Student DEIB team, a Dia de Los Muertos altar by UNIDAD, and a photobooth from Common Ground and the Asian American Culture Club. There were also games on the South Lawn, plenty of snacks, and, of course, a birthday cake!
Touching on the day’s theme, every event gave the community a chance to learn about the long history of the building, including its early days as an infirmary and a pub, how it transformed into the vibrant student center it is today, and how students can help shape The HUB into the future.
Open to all, The HUB embraces and radiates the College’s values of inclusivity and community. It is home to spaces for meeting, gathering, and dining; two kitchens, one of which is Kosher/Halal; Common Ground, dedicated to students of color and identity organizations; the LGBTQIA Space; a Spiritual Space; and WSLC, the College’s radio station.
