The Spencer Barnett Memorial Prize for Excellence in Latin American and Latino/a Studies was established by the family of Spencer Barnett, a much beloved Sarah Lawrence student who died in September of his senior year, and was awarded a posthumous degree in May of 2009. Two awards, of $1,000 and $500 are given each year for the two best conference project in any discipline that concerns Latin American, the Caribbean, or Latino/a Studies. Over the last six years, nearly seventy students have been nominated; their outstanding work, across a range of disciplines, in both English and Spanish, are a demonstration of the diversity and caliber and vital interest of Latin American Studies at Sarah Lawrence College.
