How is contemporary art relevant in an encyclopedic museum like the Metropolitan Museum, with its collections spanning 5,000 years of creative endeavor across world cultures? And how does the Museum define its identity to distinguish itself from other museums that also show work by living artists? Against the backdrop of the Metropolitan Museum of Art broadening its scope globally, Pari Stave, Senior Manager of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, will talk about the department’s strategy for its acquisitions and exhibitions, and share insights into how the department relates to other curatorial departments within the museum. She will also discuss the many ways in which the museum engages with living artists, including commissioning new works.
Pari Stave is an art historian with over 30 years of experience managing collections and exhibitions. She joined the Met six years ago, just as the museum embarked on its plan to program exhibitions for The Met Breuer. Within the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art she is responsible for Administration, Collections, and Curatorial Projects.
