When building a story-universe, how much detail should there be on the page? What do you put there? What do you hold back? What's important to think about when a writer decides to create a fictional world inspired by a culture not their own? These concerns inform not only genre fiction but wider literary fiction as well.

Tochi Onyebuchi is the author of the young adult novel Beasts Made of Night and its sequel, Crown of Thunder, the former winning him the Ilube Nommo Award for Best Speculative Fiction Novel by an African. He is also the author of the forthcoming novels War Girls (fall 2019) and Riot Baby (winter 2020).
