The Oxford English Dictionary describes “elision” as “The action of dropping out or suppressing.” However, the Oxford Living Dictionaries articulate another definition: “The process of joining together or merging things, especially abstract ideas.” When things are suppressed, what is connected to shore up the gaps? Sarah Lawrence students will have an opportunity to share their work (conference or otherwise) in a multidisciplinary setting with an emphasis on dialogue. The theme of “elision” is meant to provide a broad enough basis upon which students can build their presentations.
The hope is that this symposium, despite maintaining an emphasis on “aesthetics,” will serve as a channel through which students can meaningfully engage others with their work. As Sarah Lawrence’s pedagogy pays serious attention to individual motivation and interest, this symposium aims to foster academic conversation that originates with students and draws work from a diverse array of fields.
