Featuring Ingo Reulecke (Hochschul Zentrum für Tanz and Ernst-Busch-Hochschule), whose ongoing projects in Afghanistan and in a Berlin vocational school will guide the discussion and practice.
This event is the third and final in the Dance & Community Building: Utopian Practice in the 21st Century series, presented by Sarah Lawrence College's Summer Arts in Berlin program, Bard College's Migration Initiative, the Bard Dance Program, and Bard College Berlin.
Community Dance projects have impacted people and their communities across the globe, from Peru to Ethiopia, Northern Ireland, Romania, and Palestine. Performers and venues include migrants in Vienna, refugee homes in Berlin, inner city schools in London, British prisons. Many are long-term collaborations, and many are still ongoing.
What is Community Dance? Long a part of European culture, it’s hardly known in the US. How does a community, often with hundreds of participants, who might never have heard of modern dance, put up a professional modern dance production? What was the rationale for government funding of the Berlin school system’s Community Dance project with one million Euros annually?
