Featuring Jacalyn Carley, choreographer, author, and the on-site director of Sarah Lawrence's Summer Arts in Berlin program.
This lecture is the first in the Dance & Community Building: Utopian Practice in the 21st Century series, presented by Sarah Lawrence College's Summer Arts in Berlin program, Bard College's Migration Initiative, the Bard Dance Program, and Bard College Berlin.
Community Dance projects have impacted people and their communities across the globe, from Peru to Ethiopia, Northern Ireland, Romania, and Palestine. Performers and venues include migrants in Vienna, refugee homes in Berlin, inner city schools in London, British prisons. Many are long-term collaborations, and many are still ongoing.
What is Community Dance? Long a part of European culture, it’s hardly known in the US. How does a community, often with hundreds of participants, who might never have heard of modern dance, put up a professional modern dance production? What was the rationale for government funding of the Berlin school system’s Community Dance project with one million Euros annually?
