With the proliferation of social media technology and use, the expectations for professional behavior, especially in academic spaces, certainly looks different than it did five years ago. Whereas social media was once relegated to either personal or professional use, the two areas are now more blurry than ever. Speaking to this mixed use of social media, poets Chen Chen and Muriel Leung will discuss all aspects of social media usage as a creative and professional tool while maintaining personal integrity and privacy while sharing. In this talk, Chen and Muriel will offer best tips and advice for establishing a meaningful personal voice across Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook while practicing mindful engagement with larger social and cultural conversations with humor, bravery, and care.
Chen Chen is the author of When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities (BOA Editions), which was longlisted for the National Book Award and won the Thom Gunn Award, among other honors. Bloodaxe Books recently published the UK edition. His work appears in many publications, including Poetry and The Best American Poetry (2015 & 2019). He has received a Pushcart Prize and fellowships from Kundiman and the National Endowment for the Arts. He teaches at Brandeis University as the Jacob Ziskind Poet-in-Residence. Muriel Leung ‘10 is the author of Imagine Us, The Swarm, forthcoming from Nightboat Books and Bone Confetti, winner of the 2015 Noemi Press Book Award. A Pushcart Prize nominated writer, her writing can be found in The Baffler, Cream City Review, Gulf Coast, The Collagist, Fairy Tale Review, and others. She is a recipient of fellowships to Kundiman, VONA/Voices Workshop and the Community of Writers. She is the Editor-in-Chief of Gold Line Press and Poetry Co-Editor of Apogee Journal. She also co-hosts The Blood-Jet Writing Hour podcast with Rachelle Cruz and MT Vallarta. She is a member of Miresa Collective, a feminist speakers bureau.
