Sarah Lawrence College's Ninth Annual Poetry Festival, the largest free poetry festival in New York State, to be held April 20-22 on the Sarah Lawrence campus, will feature some 16 leading poets including 2011 National Book Award winner Nikky Finney. This year's festival will draw poets from across the country and the Atlantic, said co-director Joey DeJesus, a second-year graduate student in poetry.
Readings by the winners of a high school poetry competition, followed by poets Suzanne Gardinier, member of the Sarah Lawrence College faculty, Monica de la Torre, and Bernadette Mayer will start off the festival, which begins Friday evening and runs through Sunday.
Saturday will feature a book fair including numerous small presses and book shops. Afternoon readers will include Craig Dworkin, SLC faculty member Kevin Pilkington, Farrah Field, Joshua Marie Wilkinson and Vievee Francis. Saturday evening's activities will include a dinner reception for festival goers, followed by a reading by Rachel McKibbens, SLC students, and a "Slam Rapid Fire." The evening concludes with readings by John Whitworth and Caroline Bergvall, and a reception.
Sunday's program includes a panel discussion and readings by Mathias Svalina, Ben Lerner, Nikky Finney, Rachel Eliza Griffiths and Li-Young Lee. LUMINA, the annual literary journal featuring the art, prose, short stories, and poetry of SLC graduate students, will launch its new issue, with readings by numerous poets and writers including Michael Klein. A reception will follow.
