Food Systems Colloquium Presented by Sarah Lawrence College Students

Members of the Sarah Lawrence community and experts on the state of local and global food systems from around the region will gather in a student-organized colloquium at the College on Saturday, September 24. The program, which includes a keynote address by Lucy Jarosz, a world-renowned political ecologist from the University of Washington, will run from 10 a.m. (registration at 9:30) to 6 p.m. in the Heimbold Visual Arts Center. The program is free and open to the public.

According to members of the Geography Coalition, the student group that is organizing the event, participants will include academicians and NGO leaders. The organizers hope that the expected diversity of opinions will not only generate a greater understanding of food systems, but also instigate a call to action.

"The students believe that awareness of the issues is paramount in understanding what we, as global citizens, can do," the group's representative, Jeamme Chia, said. "In an increasingly globalized world, we are fettered with increasingly complex problems of society, politics, science and food. We've come a long way from the beginnings of industrial agriculture in the 50s to the slow food and organic movements of the 21st Century.

"It is at this juncture that students at Sarah Lawrence College have risen to the occasion to shape their futures. The College's academic pedagogy actively promotes the diversification of opinions and collegial dialogue. As a result, the pedagogy develops students who are unafraid of pursuing different ideas and integrating all of them in search of answers," she added.

The roster of speakers includes:

  • Shayna Cohen, GrowNYC/Greenmarket's wholesale greenmarket specialist, working to strategically grow New York City's only dedicated marketplace for farmer-direct sales in wholesale quantities
  • Kristin Pederson, Coordinator for the Food Systems Network NYC
  • Meghan Roguschka '12, who has focused her undergraduate studies on analyzing nuances between the environment and food, including a summer as a Davis Projects for Peace fellow, working to address food scarcity and environmental conflict in Madhya Pradesh, India
  • Joshua Muldavin, professor of Geography at Sarah Lawrence College, whose current research projects analyze international environmental policy and impacts on local resource use and vulnerability in China and the Himalayan Region
  • Marilyn Power, professor of Economics at Sarah Lawrence College, who teaches the political economics of the environment and sustainable development
  • Charles Zerner,  the Barbara B. and Bertram J. Cohn Professor of Environmental Studies at Sarah Lawrence College
  • Grace Goldfarb, a 2010 graduate of Sarah Lawrence College now working with Brandworkers International, a non-profit organization protecting and advancing the rights of retail and food employees
  • Hazel Kiefer, who, as a sophomore at the College, mounted a campaign for a union contract for SLC cafeteria workers
