Student Wins Prestigious Sportsmanship Award

Elizabeth Stitzel, Sarah Lawrence College student and captain of the SLC Equestrian Team, has been awarded the Zone 2 Region 1 Sportsmanship Award for the second consecutive year. The award has been presented annually since 1987 and Stitzel is the only two-time recipient in its history. SLC alum Julie Carino ’93 also won the award in 1993; the only other SLC student so honored.

“Liz is an outstanding role model for her team,” said coach Lori Rakoczy. “She has an amazing work ethic and outstanding sportsmanship and this award has been the one that she has cherished most of all because it was awarded to her by her peers and other coaches in our Region.”

Stitzel is a Burlington, VT native. She has been a member of the Equestrian team for four years and has served as captain for three. She has overseen the publication of the team’s newsletter and sits on the College’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Stitzel was also the recipient of the Athletic Department’s Newcomer of the Year Award her first year, and has also been honored as the College’s Athlete of the Year.

“Liz has been an outstanding representative of the College and its athletic program,” said Rakoczy.
