Two new administrators began the academic year at Sarah Lawrence College this fall and a new vice presidential position has been created. Robert Sweet is the new vice president for advancement and Amy Abrams the new dean of admission and financial aid. Thomas Blum, formerly executive assistant to the president, has been named to the new position of vice president for administration.
Robert Sweet, of Sharon, Conn., has joined Sarah Lawrence as vice president for advancement. Most recently he served as director of gift planning at Vassar College. Prior to 10 years in the higher education development field, Sweet was a member of the faculty at Oglethorpe University, where he taught Middle Eastern political economics. He has his bachelor's degree in anthropology from Emory University and studied archaeology in the Negev Desert on a Dorot Scholarship. He has dual degrees from the University of Texas-Austin: an MBA in International Business and an MA in Middle Eastern Studies. He also received a Fulbright Scholarship for studies in Syria, served as a teacher of English and economics at the U.N. School of Syria, and was then appointed to serve as an economic research affiliate in the Middle East Program of The Carter Center.
Amy Abrams, of Bronxville, comes to Sarah Lawrence from Scripps College, where she had been director of admission since 1998. Abrams became Sarah Lawrence's new dean of admission and financial aid on August 1. A graduate of Skidmore College, Abrams began her career in admissions in 1985 at the University of Pennsylvania, where she became regional director before moving in 1994 to Occidental College as associate dean, and later, admission director. Abrams has had substantial experience managing a recruitment territory that overlaps with the regions that generate a substantial proportion of Sarah Lawrence's applicants: New England, New York, and Southern California.
Thomas Blum, of Rye Brook, formerly executive assistant to the president at Sarah Lawrence, has been appointed to a new position of vice president for administration. He joined SLC in 2005 from The March of Dimes, where he had been the chief of staff in the office of the president for five years. He also previously held a position at NYU in the office of the deputy chancellor and the office of the vice president for academic development, where he was involved in policy analysis, institutional research, and academic resource planning.
