Student and Faculty Work
Working 1:1
The relationship between teacher and student is at the heart of a Sarah Lawrence education. In the Working 1:1 series of videos, students and their mentors talk about the range of inquiry that’s possible when working one to one.
Emily Lin ’09 helped her don, Drew Cressman (biology), research crucial immune system proteins in the Summer Science Program. Now he’s helping her apply to graduate school in molecular biology. Aiden Bussey ’09 started as a creative writing student, but got hooked on physics with Kanwal Singh. Rickey McGhee ’11 and his don, Suzanne Gardinier (writing), explore whether writing can be taught, finding one’s voice in the face of tragedy, and how studying poetry can make one a better person.
Open Studio
Each May, Visual Arts students invite the public into the Heimbold Visual Arts Center as they showcase the work they've done throughout the year. We sent a camera crew into a recent Open Studio to get a feel for the Visual Arts at SLC.
Conference Works
In our seminar/conference system, each course consists of a seminar (a small, highly interactive class) and a biweekly conference in which students meet one on one with professors to plan and discuss independent projects related to the course. These independent enterprises help students develop and refine their skills of analysis, interpretation, and writing, and allow them to study that which will prove most rewarding. We've compiled a selection of students' recent conference works to showcase the extraordinary range of intellectual inquiry that the seminar/conference system makes possible.
