Contents & Search Tips
Ethnic NewsWatch

Ethnic NewsWatch features newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic and minority press, providing researchers access to essential, often overlooked perspectives. With titles dating from 1990, ENW presents a comprehensive, full-text collection of nearly 1.6 million articles from more than 280 publications offering both national and regional coverage. While the content may mirror mainstream media coverage, the viewpoints are decidedly unique.

  TRUNCATION

*

Use the asterisk for truncation to replace any number of characters in the search term. It can come at the beginning, middle or end of a search term, eg. nativ* retrieves native, natives, nativism. Mas*achuset*s retrieves the correct spelling of Massachusetts. You can include only two asterisks per search term.

?

Use the question mark to replace one character in the search term, (for example wom?n). You can include as many occurrences as you wish, i.e., it can be repeated and come anywhere in the search term.

 OPERATORS

The following Boolean terms or correlating symbols can be used:

AND (+)

where both terms are present

OR (,)

where either term is present

NOT (#)

excludes the term following the operator

NOTE: Do not use (,) in the Author/Byline field or People (Names) field between first and last names or the system will search for both the first and last names separately as it would in an "OR" search.

WITHOUT

the same as NOT

ADJX

The search terms must occur within x words of one another for a match, x being a number. Eg. law adj5 native will find all documents in which the word law appears within 5 words or less of the word native. It is order dependent. This search is only valid in the Words in Articles search field.

NEARX

The search terms must occur within x terms of one another in the field, but the order is irrelevant. This search is only valid in the Words in Articles field.

NONE

Entering this term within a search field will search for documents for which that field is empty

""

The database searches for keywords placed in quotation marks as a complete phrase.

ALL

Entering this term within a search field will search for documents which contain data in that field.
