  Main Library Reserve Collection

Materials on reserve include books, periodicals, cassettes (video and audio), DVDs, course readers, instructors' personal copies, electronic resources and photocopies. Students who borrow from reserve do so with an understanding that the materials must be made available to all within a short period of time, and therefore the penalties for noncompliance are substantial.

How do I submit reserve requests?

Reserve request letters are sent to all teaching faculty in April for the fall semester and in November for the spring semester. Reserve requests must be submitted in a timely manner. Please use the reserve online form for requesting both hard copy items and electronic reserve items. http://pages.slc.edu/%7Elibrary/dbforms/ts/reserves/form/ or
email the Reserve Department at reserves (at) slc.edu

Questions?  Contact Kristina Bucher - Kbucher (at) slc.edu (914) 395-2431
or Bobbie Smolow - bsmolow (at) slc.edu (914) 395-2476.

What are electronic reserves?

Articles or book chapters are scanned and converted to PDF files in the library and posted on MySLC. The record for these items will be included in MySLC on your course page under “ Readings and Handouts”. The article record will include a link to the article in PDF format. Any who are unfamiliar with electronic reserves can contact the Kristina Bucher (914) 395-2431 or Bobbie Smolow (914) 395- 2476, or send an email to reserves (at) slc.edu

Back to questions

What happens if my reserve selections are not already held in the library collection?

Securing items needed for reserve is given the highest priority, and books and journal articles are usually obtained within a two-week period. Of course, out-of-print material is harder to obtain, but we make every effort to fulfill requests for the reserve collection. You will be notified if there is a substantial delay, so substitutions can be suggested.

Back to questions

Do I need to let you know if I want items from my bookstore list to be on reserve?

Yes, please list all items needed for reserve INCLUDING those on your bookstore list. The items on the bookstore are not automatically placed on reserve.

Back to questions

How do I arrange for a course reader?

Please make sure to let us know if you are planning to use a course reader so that the library can purchase a copy from the bookstore and place it on reserve for your students.

You can arrange for a course reader through the Sarah Lawrence College Bookstore. The vendors, Campus Custom Publishing and Grade A Notes, require a full eight-weeks lead-time in order to secure copyright permissions and assemble your readers. For complete instructions, please contact the Sarah Lawrence College Bookstore:

Back to questions

How many reserve copies are needed for each course?

Our suggestion is one copy of a book for every 15 students in a class.  This means that a single copy would do for a seminar of 15 and perhaps 3 copies for a lecture of 45 to 50.

Back to questions

What are the reserve loan periods?

Unless otherwise requested, all reserve material circulates for 3 hours at a time, with overnight privileges granted if the checkout time is within 3 hours of library closing.  Other options are 5 hours, 1 day, 3 days, and 1 week.

Back to questions

How do I arrange for a student to borrow a reserve item for an extended period?

To arrange for a student to borrow a reserve item for an extended period, or to remove an item from reserve for a student's personal use, faculty should contact the Reserve Department reserves (at) slc.edu or call Kristina Bucher (914) 395-2431 or Bobbie Smolow (914) 395-2476.

Back to questions

What do I do if a reserve item is reported missing?

Faculty should contact Kristina Bucher - reserves (at) slc.edu (914) 395-2431 or Bobbie Smolow (914) 395-2476.

Back to questions

Can I use the online library catalog to search for items on my reserve list?

Yes, you can search for a hard copy by instructor, department, or course name by searching under Course Reserve in the library catalog. All electronic reserve materials can be found on MySLC.
