with significant funds for acquisitions and archival support.

Some accomplishments this year:

  • Provided funds for the database Early American Newspapers (1690-1876), "a unique, webbased archive of Americana that provides a fascinating glimpse into our nation's past. The Early American Newspaper Collection will feature the images and full-text content from scores of historical publications."

Some accomplishments of the previous year:

  • Provided funds for the charter membership for ARTstor- ARTstor is a non-profit organization created by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. As part of its ongoing effort to become a community resource, ARTstor is developing a rich digital library that will offer coherent collections of art images and descriptive information as well as the sortware tools to enable active use of the collections. The ARTstor Library's initial content will include approximately 300,000 images covering art, architecture, and archeology. ARTstor's initial software tools will support a wide range of pedagogical and research uses including: viewing and analyzing images through features such as zooming and panning, saving groups of images online and offline. This community resource will be made available for educational and scholarly uses that are noncommercial in nature.
  • Celebrated the 75th Anniversary of Sarah Lawrence College by sponsoring two literary events. A tribute to Jane Cooper, poet and a member of the writing faculty who taught at the college from 1951-1987. In April, the Friends hosted "An Evening with Ann Patchett," SLC alum and author of the prize-winning novel Bel Canto.
